Professional Advice & Service
It can be a confusing process understanding which size bike will best suit you're child when surrounded with many different options, to help with this we've created a basic sizing guide to help get you started on choosing the perfect size bike for your little ripper! Children's bikes are available in 3 main sizes, 12" (30cm), 16" (40cm) and 20" (50cm).
Sizing is one of, if not the most important choice when it comes to selecting a new bike. Choose a bike that is too small and the rider will feel cramped whilst finding it difficult to pedal and maneuvere. On the flip side, a bike that is too big will be again be uncomfortable for the rider with difficulty reaching the handlebars and/or putting their feet on the ground along with causing issues with handling and maneuverability (all serious safety concerns). On the correct size bike a rider should be able to hop on and off without difficulty, feel comfortable and be easily able to reach the handlebars and put their feet flat on the ground. When it comes time to ride, a correct fitting bike should feel both responsive and maneuverable. The majority of children's bikes will have a higher standover height to allow the rider to be seated whilst pedaling and maintain a smooth pedaling motion.
Wheel Size | Height From | Height To |
12" Balance | 65cm | 85cm |
12" | 80cm | 110cm |
16" | 105cm | 120cm |
20" | 115cm | 130cm |
The youngest of riders will start their BMX journey with either a 12" balance bike or pedal bike. 12" bikes are ideal for riders approximately 2 to 4 years of age or 80-110cm. The majority of 12" bikes will come standard with removeable training wheels and a rear coaster brake (foot brake).
Once they've mastered the basics and outgrown the 12" bike it's time to step up to a 16".16" bikes are perfect for young riders 4-6 years of age and approximately 105-120cm in height. Most 16" will come with removeable training wheels, rear coaster brake and a front hand brake.
Designed for riders approximately 6-8 years and age and between 115-130cm in height. Most 20" kids bikes do not come with training wheels but may have the option to have them fitted at the time of purchase if required. Just like a 16", the majority of 20" children's bikes feature a rear coaster brake and front hand brake and have a singlespeed drivetrain for ease of use.
